Since 2005 he has been Professor of Modern History at the UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia); formerly at universities in the Basque Country (1987-1988) and Valladolid (1988-2005), where in 1973 he began his teaching career.
He has been Investigator and Scientist at CSIC (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas) with leave of absence.
Premio Extraordinario Award and Doctorate from the University of Valladolid.
Accesit to the End of Degree National Price in the History Career (1975) and “Victor de Bronce” to the academic merit.
National History Price of Spain 2003 for the book “La Monarquía de España y la Guerra de Mesina (1674-1678) (Madrid, Actas, 2002).
He has been Director of the Secretariat of Publications and Scientific Exchange (1983-1990), of the University Institute of History “Simancas” (1995-2002) and of the Cátedra “Felipe II” (Phillip II Chair) 2005. He also carried out the positions of Vice-president of the “Sociedad V Centenario del Tratado de Tordesillas” 1993-1995 Vice Commissary of the Spanish.
Pavilion at the Lisbon Expo ’98 1996-1998. Spanish representative at the “Consejo Superior del Instituto Universitario Europeo de Florencia” 1996-97 and Director of the “Centro de Estudios Hispánicos e Iberoamericanos” from the Fundación Carolina 2001-2002.
He has been organizer of the following exhibitions: “Felipe II. Las Tierras y Los Hombres Del Rey” Valladolid, October 1998-January 1999, and “Isabel la Católica, Reina de dos mundos” New York, June-July 2004.
